Key Stage 3
The delivery of Physical Education at Key Stage 3 at JRCS has been updated and brought in line with the new NCPE that was launched in September 2008. Pupils are being taught the concepts of various different types of activities which should allow them to see similarities and differences in various sports and also allow them to transfer their skills across those sports. An example of this may be a pupils learning to find space in a game situation and being able to utilize that skill in sports such as football, netball, basketball and other invasion games. Below is a list of activities/units that the pupils partake in at KS3.

  • Aesthetics
  • Athletics
  • Health Related Fitness
  • Invasion Games
  • Outdoor Adventure Activities
  • Striking and Fielding
  • Net/Wall Games

Assessment for learning is something that we regard extremely important in PE. Pupils are encouraged to level their ability using student friendly level descriptors and are then able to prioritise areas for their development. ICT is used in the majority of lessons to record pupil performance. This footage enables them the opportunity to watch their performance and highlight strengths and areas for development.

Key Stage 4
Physical Education at JRCS is an option choice and pupils who opt in sit a GCSE examination under Ed Excel. The course is broken down into 60% practical assessment and 40% theoretical assessment which includes an exam at the end of the two year course. The practical assessment requires the pupils to fulfill a variety of roles including the performer, coach & official. Pupils will be assessed in a range of sports and their best four will go forward towards their final grade. At GCSE level pupils are expected to be responsible for their own learning and well being.

Pupils sitting their GCSE in PE at Jo Richardson in 2010 performed extremely well. A fantastic 75% of our students achieved an A*-C grade in our subject which is 11% above the national average. Furthermore 26% of our students achieved an A*-A grade which is 6% above national average.

Core PE at KS4 is compulsory and allows students to experience a diverse range of activities which we hope will have a positive impact on their decision to continue a healthy and active lifestyle post 16. Pupils are given the chance to complete the sports leaders award which offers them a qualification and the invaluable experience of working with primary and infant students within the local community. Students are given the opportunity to experience the following activities:

  • Badminton
  • Basketball
  • Fitness
  • Football
  • Handball
  • Rugby
  • Striking and Fielding
  • Tag Rugby
  • Trampolining
  • Volleyball

6th Form
At KS5 we deliver the Subsidary Diploma in Sport, Development and Coaching. Combined with this award the pupils also have the option of completing a Community Sports Leaders Award which is recognized nationally. This involves the pupils organizing and running sporting events for younger pupils in the surrounding primary schools. The pupils complete 6 units of work over a two year period and are expected to work independently and research information to complete their assignments.
