International News 2010-2011

Work The World

It's been a busy year so far for JRCS and it's International Projects.

Early in the year, James Collins Y11 took JRCS to the other side of the world and completed his work experience in Australia.

We are currently planning Work Experience abroad for Nancy Nsiah and Mary Akowe Y10.

Singapore Visit

In early December we welcomed 24 visitors from Singapore on a student exchange. Students took experienced the day to day life of JRCS and enjoyed their chosen subject lessons. It was an opportunity to reflect and dicuss the differences between the UK and Singapore education system. The visitors from Singapore had also never seen snow before!

We hope that in 2012 our students will be able to visit Singapore and see how life differs for them too!

READ International

Since the start of January 2011 Miss Wright's Y12 Business Studies students have been working hard along with Miss Wright and Miss Meek on the READ International project. The project aims to raise money to send old unwanted textbooks and reading books to Uganda and Tanzania to improve the education system of those with less funding.

Our students have been working hard to raise the awareness of education around the world and aim to raise £2000 to send around 5000 books abroad. They've made real progress already through cake sales, karaoke and fun activities. As well as creating a general awareness about the power of books, READ International fundraising events will conincide with World Book Day on the 3rd March 2011.

Sport in Spain

The PE department are in the process of organising a sporting tournament in Spain in Oct 2011.

MFL European Day of Languages

The MFL department is actively involved in the International School Award.

Each year we organise a massive speed dating event on the European Day of Languages in September with more than 30 languages taught by students, staff and sixth formers.

Hundreds of pupils enjoy learning basic conversation in the Hall during lunch break.

Flag and food of the world competitions are also on the panel on the day.

A great day for every one!

The Japanese club runs weekly in parallel with the school links with two schools in Japan. Fuji Junior High School in Saitama and the University of Chiba are regularly corresponding with our students by emails and on our blog:

www.esd-worldnetwork.blogspot.com

Pupils also exchange drafts and works with their pen pals in Japan.

Pupils have already met and presented their school to the representatives of Chiba University in November 2009.

Work the World

Students in Y11 are encouraged to take advantage of the oppurtunity to complete their work experience abroad with the help of some funding from school.

In 2010 James Collins completed his work experience in Sydney, Australia. Here he worked as a mechanic, while enjoying the sights and surroundings.

In November 2011 current Y10 students, Nancy Nsiah 10D and Mary Akowe 10H will be completing their work experience in Boston and New York, America! The girls have been working hard to raise some funds for their adventure.

The school will help providing a placement and will contribute to the financial costs of the project.

The project is possible thanks to the school strong links abroad with pupils, staff and departments.

The pupil is selected after submitting a  letter of application and going through an  interview with the Headteacher and Miss Meek ISA-coordinator.

Black History Month:

Every year JRCS take pride in organising events celebrating the diversity of our students and their origins.

The celebration included assembly programmes lead by students from Afro-Caribbean backgrounds, tutor time activities and quizzes, and departmental activities.

The aim of the events was to raise awareness of the wide ethnic backgrounds that make JRCS a unique school in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.

It reminded students of the importance of remembrance for slavery, and celebrate Black culture heritage.

JRCS students from Ghana, Nigeria, Congo, Somalia, Antigua, Jamaica and many more were proud to take part in the events with Dance, story telling and presentations. They are already planning the next event!

International Assembly programme:

Heads of year are enthusiastic and resourceful, they are often lead by the students in their year group to present themed assemblies relating to global issues.

Pupils and staff lead assemblies throughout the year on:

- World Poverty

- Christmas and festivals of the World

- My other life abroad / My life in a different language

- AIDS

- Climate change

- Languages

Extra-curricular activities and sponsored projects:

Trips take a great part of the learning process. They help student understand the world from a different point of view, to improve language skills, to open their mind and become more independent.

Trips are vital to the development of the global dimension of our curriculum, and to the educational development of our students.

Each year the school runs an endless list of trips to support students’ learning.

Sometimes students even sponsor their own trips abroad by doing sponsored events and raising funds towards their visits.

This is the case of our students in the Japanese club who are working on fund raising to meet their friends in Japan.

The sponsored manga marathon  will raise money towards the Japan exchange 2010.

Pupils and staff also raise funds to travel and help building schools in Africa as part of the Africa Challenge.
